After updates, twitter does not count images as characters. That means that as you tweet, twitter does not take any of your character space when you add an image.
While that is the case, you can add up to 4 images to any tweets. This is exclusive of animated GIFs(because only 1 GIF is allowed on a single post).
Sometimes, there is usually no need of uploading so many images on a single tweet but you can use these strategy in various circumstances.
